Licence and notices

Helia is free software under the GNU General Public Licence, version 3 or (at your option) any later version, with the additional terms below. The Helia logo is not part of that licence. Back to the main site: 12hobbies.studio.

Additional terms under section 7 of the GNU General Public License version 3

Helia is free software under the GNU General Public License, version 3 or (at your option) any later version. The licence text is in LICENSE and is unmodified.

As permitted by section 7(b) and 7(c) of that licence, the following additional terms apply to Helia and to every work based on it:

  1. The author attribution "Copyright (C) 2026 Laurence Horrocks-Barlow" and the dedication of Helia, which forms part of that author attribution, must be preserved, unaltered, in the source code notices and in the Appropriate Legal Notices displayed by the program (its About page and its version output).

  2. Modified versions must be marked as changed from the original, and must not be presented as the original work or as made or endorsed by Laurence Horrocks-Barlow.

The dedication

Helia is dedicated to my daughter, the light of my life. Her middle name is Helia, because she has an energetic spark. She has not stayed still since the day she was born, which suits software whose whole job is catching the sharp moments in something that never stops moving.

What this means in practice

  • Keep the SPDX header and the line that points here at the top of every source file. You may add your own copyright line for work you contribute; you may not remove or change the line above.
  • In a modified version, the About page and the output of --version must still show the copyright line, the dedication, the no-warranty notice, the licence and a notice of these additional terms. Add your own notices beside them, not in place of them.
  • If you distribute a modified version, mark it as changed from the original (for example in the About page, the version output and the release notes). Do not present it as the original work, and do not say or imply that Laurence Horrocks-Barlow made or endorses it.
  • The Helia logo is not covered by the GPL and is all rights reserved, see LOGO-LICENCE.md. A modified version or fork must replace it.
  • Contributions are accepted under GPL-3.0-or-later with these additional terms.

These are additional terms permitted by section 7(b) and 7(c) of the GPL. They are not further restrictions within the meaning of the licence.

Helia logo licence

Copyright (C) 2026 Laurence Horrocks-Barlow. All rights reserved.

The Helia source code is free software under the GPL-3.0-or-later with the additional terms in ADDITIONAL-TERMS.md. The Helia logo is not part of that. The logo, and every image derived from it, is not covered by the GPL. In the REUSE sense it is LicenseRef-Helia-Logo (the text is in LICENSES/LicenseRef-Helia-Logo.txt).

What is covered

Everything under assets/branding/, and the copies of it elsewhere in the repository :

FileWhat it is
helia-logo.pngThe original artwork, unmodified.
helia-logo.svgThe vector artwork, unmodified.
helia-logo-transparent.pngThe vector logo without its background.
icons/helia-<size>.pngSquare icons, 16 to 1024 pixels.
helia.ico, helia.icnsThe Windows and macOS icons.

cargo xtask branding rebuilds everything except the two originals from helia-logo.svg. The originals are identified by their SHA-256:

33accd205d49891ee85f39f7c401ed0e76fbfcf9ef2777cc8a7985f7437b2812 helia-logo.png
cc3f7be591846a5e882144ec816ee575783bc18be82fb70f6360ff738982c721 helia-logo.svg

What you may do

  • Use the logo, unmodified, in unmodified builds of Helia, such as the releases published by the author.
  • Use the unmodified logo to refer to the Helia project: an article, a review, a link to the project page.

Anything else needs the author's written permission.

Forks and modified versions

If you distribute a modified version of Helia, or a fork, you must replace the logo and every image derived from it with your own, so that your version is not mistaken for the original. This goes with section 2 of ADDITIONAL-TERMS.md (GPLv3 section 7(c)): a modified version must not be presented as the original work or as made or endorsed by Laurence Horrocks-Barlow. The places to change are the README, the book, the About page and the window icon in crates/helia-gui, the Windows icon in crates/helia-gui/build.rs and the Linux icons and desktop file in packaging/.
